Bowman Will Return Next Season

Scotty Bowman, 67, announced Thursday he will return to the Detroit Red Wings for a ninth season and his 30th season as a head coach.

"I've always felt I'll know when I'm ready to step aside," Bowman said. "This season, the season ran well. Obviously, the playoffs didn't."

After winning the 1997 and 1998 Stanley Cups, the Red Wings had two second round exits before this year's meltdown against the Los Angeles Kings in the first round.

Bowman has won eight Stanley Cups; five with Montreal, one with Pittsburgh and two with Detroit. Ninth Cup would brake the NHL record Bowman shares with Toe Blake.
