DiPietro Is No. 1 PickArchived from 2000-01 season. | |
The New York Islanders made hockey history by making Rick DiPietro the first goalie selected as the first overall pick in the NHL entry draft.
Then came the Isles deals as GM Mike Milbury traded goalie Kevin Weekes to Tampa Bay for draft picks; goalie Robert Luongo and center Olli Jokinen to Florida for Oleg Kvasha and Mark Parrish; defenseman Eric Brewer, left wing Josh Green and second-round pick to Edmonton for veteran Oilers defenseman Roman Hamrlik. "We're rolling the dice here a little bit," Milbury said. "We have not made the playoffs in far too long and we need to get there. Our owners, let's face it, didn't come into this business to wait another five years for us to make the playoffs." |
