Dominik Hasek stopped 31 shots, including Mark Recchi's first-period penalty shot, as the Buffalo Sabres beat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 on Wednesday night in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
"I was trying to catch my breath first. My mind set was to try and get him to go down and then get it up and over him," Recchi said. "I just didn't get it high enough, he made a good save." Chris Gratton and Doug Gilmour scored for the Sabres, who were swept by the Flyers in four-game regular season series. "It's different now," Philadelphia left wing John LeClair said. "It's a seven-game series. Those four games didn't mean much to us. We weren't looking at them like we own them or anything like that. We were prepared. We weren't taking them lightly by any means." Buffalo managed to score only twice on Flyers' goalie Roman Cechmanek in the regular season. "We were prepared for him," Hasek said of Cechmanek. "He played his best hockey against us. Once the regular season is over, it doesn't count." Eric Desjardins scored Philadelphia's lone goal. |
