Red Wings Win Game 1Archived from 2000-01 season. | |
Brendan Shanahan scored twice as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Los Angeles Kings 5-3 in the Western Conference Quarterfinals series opener.
"It's just what everybody on our team expects from one another this time of year," Shanahan said. Steve Yzerman left the ice after five minutes in the first period with a sore leg. He did not return to the game. "He has played with injuries before," Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said, "so once he said he couldn't help the team, then you've got to go with that." Tomas Holmstrom, Sergei Fedorov and Igor Larionov scored for Detroit, who swept Los Angeles in the first round last year. Kelly Buchberger, Ziggy Palffy and Luc Robitaille scored for Los Angeles. "If we don't respond well, we're going to be in trouble," Los Angeles' Bryan Smolinski said. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Saturday at Detroit. |
