Jeff O'Neill scored the winning goal in the third period as the Carolina Hurricanes beat New Jersey 3-2 to stave off elimination and cut the Devils' lead in the series to 3-2.
"It all starts over again Sunday," O'Neill said. "We did a lot of standing around and watching the first three games. I don't know why we played that way for so long." The Devils outshot the Canes with a whopping 39-14 margin, but goalie Arturs Irbe in Carolina's net made one spectacular save after another. "These two games we've been fortunate, we were able to play our best hockey," Irbe said. "We just figured out a way to scratch and claw and get hard-fought wins." Josef Vasicek and Sami Kapanen also scored for Carolina while Scott Gomez and Bobby Holik tallied for New Jersey. "We started to believe in ourselves after we won Game 4," Hurricanes defenseman Glen Wesley said. "We've built some confidence in ourselves and the style of game we have to play." Game 6 is on Sunday in Raleigh, NC. |
