series

Brian Rafalski's pass attempt hit the skate of Toronto's Cory Cross and bounced in the net seven minutes into overtime, giving the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 win over the Maple Leafs.

"I was trying to make a pass to (Randy McKay)," Rafalski said. "He was trying to go back door. That's his kitchen down there. But the defenseman turned, it went off his skate, and I'll take it."

Bobby Holik and Scott Gomez also scored for the Devils, who took a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series.

"You need four wins to win a series. We got two. It's great winning in overtime," Devils center Bobby Holik said. "We did the necessary things to win. We've shown more character as the series went on."
