2002 Playoffs

Dominik Hasek started this series strong by stopping all 23 shots as the Detroit Red Wings beat the St. Louis Blues 2-0 in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series.

"They tried to be physical, but my defense did a very good job in front of me," Hasek said. "Twice on the power play, I think they hit the post. I was very lucky."

Brett Hull and Pavel Datsyuk scored for Detroit, who were determined not to start the series in the same manner as in first round, when they dropped first two games at home to Vancouver.

Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is Saturday afternoon in Detroit.

Senators Rout Leafs
Patrick Lalime stopped 27 shots and the Ottawa Senators took an early lead and never looked back in a 5-0 rout over the tired Toronto Maple Leafs.

"It's only one game," said Senators goaltender Patrick Lalime. "It's a long series. You want to enjoy it when it's done. But you've got to move on and prepare yourself for the next one."

Martin Havlat, Radek Bonk and Shane Hnidy each scored before the game was 12 minutes old and Todd White and Daniel Alfredsson added second period goals for the Senators, who were playing their first game in six days after eliminating Philadelphia in the first round.

Toronto had just one day off after eliminating the New York Islanders in a grueling and physical seven-game series.

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Saturday at Toronto.
