The Ottawa Senators won the President's Trophy, awarded to the team with the NHL's best regular season record.
The Senators (51-21-8-1) clinched the league's best record when Detroit tied Columbus 5-5 Friday night. The team finishing first overall has won three of the last four Stanley Cups. Ottawa has also set franchise records with 111 points and 51 victories this season. Ottawa will face the New York Islanders in the first round of the playoffs, beginning next week. The team that wins the trophy, first awarded after the 1985-86 season, gets a bonus of $100,000 while the players get a bonus of $250,000 to be divided among them. |
