Bertuzzi Suspended For SeasonMar 11, 2004 | |
Vancouver Canucks forward Todd Bertuzzi has been banned until at least the start of next season after an attack that left an opponent with a broken neck.
Bertuzzi was suspended for the rest of the regular season and the entire Stanley Cup playoffs and Vancouver was fined $250,000. Bertuzzi's future will be decided by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman before the next season. "We want to make clear that this type of conduct will not be tolerated in the NHL," said NHL Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. "No final determination on the total duration of Mr. Bertuzzi's suspension has yet been made." Bertuzzi struck Moore on the head from behind and jumped on his back driving him face first into the ice late in Monday night's 9-2 Colorado victory. "It was disgusting," Avalanche defenseman Derek Morris said. "I haven't seen anything like that in my seven years of playing hockey. This was premeditated; this was the worst thing I've seen." "We came to play hockey, we played a very good period and had things under control and that was their only way to try to get something out of tonight," Colorado coach Tony Granato said. |
