The Washington Capitals continued to slash their payroll by trading defenseman Sergei Gonchar and center Michael Nylander to the Boston Bruins.

Nylander and Gonchar were sent packing after the Capitals had already traded Steve Konowalchuk (Colorado), Jaromir Jagr (New York Rangers), Peter Bondra (Ottawa) and Robert Lang (Detroit) this season.

"It's been difficult, but ... we're trying to do what we think is best for the hockey club in the near future," Capitals general manager George McPhee said.

"We went into this time of year looking for a defenseman and a second line center and we accomplished that," Bruins' general manager Mike O'Connell said.
