The Detroit Red Wings demoted goaltender Curtis Joseph, who has been on the trading block since Dominik Hasek returned from retirement, to Grand Rapids of the AHL.

"They really left it up to me and there were three different possible scenarios," Joseph said. "I could have played this weekend for the team, or maybe drive down on Friday, and Grand Rapids is at home — it's two hours from my house, get a game in there and then play next week."

Detroit has too many goalies, but nobody is biting on Joseph with two years left on his contract worth $16 million.

"Well, I want to start playing some games here — we all do, so I am excited," Joseph said. "I'll see how I feel after Friday and I'll be coming back to Detroit on Friday night and take it there. Everybody else has played exhibition games and red-and-white games, so it'll be good."
