Kariya angry at Disney

Archived from 1997-98 season.
Kariya Paul Kariya is reportedly very angry at Walt Disney Company's negotiating tactics and may hold out through the entire season.

Kariya is reportedly happy with the money in Disney's last offer of $7 million per season, but doesn't like the way the company is trying to make him sign it.

Disney's alledged strong-arm tactics include an alledged call from Disney CEO Michael Eisner, claiming the team was strapped for cash. The Ducks reortedly made a profit of more than $7 million last season and Disney in July reported a profit of $473 million for the latest quarter available.

Kariya is also still unhappy about the firing of coach Ron Wilson in May and the team's refusal to hire a full-time masseur for road trips. The team paid such low salary for their massage therapist, that Kariya offered to house the man for much of the season.

Disney is shooting back with the removal of Kariya related merchandise from the team store, cutting him out of last season's highlight video and removing his name plate and picture from the team's locker.

Whether Kariya joins his teammates or not remains to be seen. The Ducks' fans booed the coach and team officials and repeatedly chanted "We want Paul, we want Paul" during the Ducks' home opener at the Pond of Anaheim. Anaheim will have a huge job to fix the relations with the fans, who were already angry at Disney for firing coach Wilson allegedly for not getting along with "Disney-guy" GM Jack Ferreira.

The Ducks party line is that Kariya remains a hold-out on instructions received from the NHL Players Association. The team says that Kariya and his agent Don Baizley haven't responded to their latest offer.
