Finland beat Russia in overtime to win the World Junior Championship in Helsinki, Finland. Niklas Hagman scored at 13:41 of OT to give Finland a 2-1 victory. Hagman's father, Matti Hagman, was the first ever Finnish player to play in the NHL.
Switzerland took the bronze medal by beating the Czech Rebublic on penalty shots after the teams failed to break a 3-3 tie in overtime. The United States defeated Sweden, 3-2, for fifth place with defensemen Nikos Tselios and Mike Mottau and tournament scoring leader Jeff Farkas scoring the goals. Kazakhstan beat Canada, 6-3, for seventh and Slovakia sent Germany to the B category by winning the relegation game, 8-3. |
