Konstantinov fights for his life

For the first time after Friday's accident doctors were optimistic about Vladimir Konstantinov's condition. He continued to respond to family members and teammates.

However his doctor cautioned that there is no guarantee of further improvement. "From one standpoint that is good news, that there is no significant deterioration," said Dr. James Robbins, a trauma surgeon at William Beaumont Hospital.

Will Konstantinov ever play hockey again is not yet known. "We have certainly seen patients in much serious condition, with worse head injuries, who have survived and done well and walked out of the hospital," Robbins said.

Konstantinov and team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov suffered massive head injuries when their limo ran into a tree Friday night. Third passenger Slava Fetisov and limo driver Richard Gnida suffered only minor injuries. Gnida's license had been revoked until next year because of his bad driving history. Authorities will meet today if charges will be filed against him.
