The Toronto Maple Leafs had their wish granted and will move to Eastern Conference. The Leafs will move from Central Division to Northeast Division for the 1998-99 season.

"We've been trying to accomplish this for a few years and we're thankful the league saw fit to allow us to go," said Bill Watters, assistant to Leafs president Ken Dryden.

Toronto will go head to head with their long-time rival the Montreal Canadiens.

The board also approved minor changes in scheduling. For the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons, each team in the Eastern Conference will play the other teams in its division a total of five times; Western Conference teams will play each divisional opponent six times.

Each team will play the teams in the other divisions in its conference a total of four times. Each team will play either one or two games against all teams outside its conference.
