Joe Thornton is No.1 choice As expected the Boston Bruins selected Joe Thornton of Sault Ste. Marie (OHL) as the first overall pick in 1997 NHL Entry Draft. This year's draft was pretty uneventful, first deal coming two hours after first pick. Carolina trading their second first-round pick (23rd overall) to San Jose for Sharks' second-round pick and third pick 1998. Most of the top prospects were picked as scouts had them projected. Small surprise was Robert Luongo becoming the highest drafted goalie ever when the New York Islanders selected him fourth overall. Copyright©1997 The HockeyNut |
