Yzerman scores 1,400th pointArchived from 1997-98 season. | |
Steve Yzerman scored two goals two became the 13th person to reach 1,400 points Sunday as Detroit beat Buffalo, 4-2.
Yzerman also moved to 12th on the NHL career goals list with 561 goals moving him past Guy Lafleur. "He's a guy I grew up watching in Ottawa when the Canadiens were on every Saturday night," Yzerman said. "When I was growing up those were my heroes, so it's nice to have my name with them. But it's hard to place yourself with them." Yzerman has played exceptionally well after coming back from the Olympics at Nagano last February. He has nine goals and eight assists in his last 13 games. "Since I came back I've been trying to play with speed, to take off with the puck instead of just waiting for something to happen," Yzerman said. "My chances come with skating. I really try to get it and accelerate." There was another milestone Sunday night when Detroit's Larry Murphy became the 36th player to reach 1,100 points with an assist on Yzerman's second goal. "I'm proud of it; it wasn't something I anticipated happening," Murphy said. "But you just keep playing, and I've been very fortunate." |
