CuJo makes the savesArchived from 1998-99 season. | |
Steve Thomas scored the winning goal and Curtis Joseph made 40 saves as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 and took two games to one lead in their playoff series.
Thomas was already disliked by the Flyers, who took exception to Thomas' hard checks on Eric Desjardin and Mark Recchi. The Flyers were trying to pay him back but suffered mental lapses in doing so. Graig Berube knocked Thomas down when play was stopped with 14 seconds left in the first period. The penalty turned its ugly head on the Flyers when Thomas scored 40 seconds into the second period on the Toronto power play. There as another incident when Philadelphia's Sandy McCarthy accused Toronto's Tie Domi of using a racial slur. Domi denied it, and NHL officials were looking into the accusation. "He dropped an N-bomb on me," said McCarthy, who is part black and part North American Indian. Domi, who said McCarthy spat in his face, flatly denied the accusation. "He spit in my face, so maybe he was looking for some excuse," Domi said. "I would never use those kind of words, and he knows that. He can say what he wants." Curtis Joseph was the key factor in the game and clearly outplayed Flyers goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck. Philadelphia outshot Toronto by a 41-22 margin. "That's CuJo's game, the playoffs," Thomas said. "He proved it again tonight. He's an unbelievable competitor." |
