Only nine players were selected Monday in 1998 NHL Waiver Draft. On the top of the list was Detroit's center Brent Gilchrist who was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Gilchrist was later re-acquired by Detroit for sixth-round pick in the 1999 entry draft.
Expansion Nashville Predators had the first pick and they took left wing Zdeno Ciger from Edmonton Oilers. List of selected players:
Total of 191 players were left unprotected, including 21 goalies. Big names left unprotected that were not selected included Jim Carey of Boston, John Cullen of Tampa Bay, Ray Ferraro of Los Angeles, Kirk Muller of Florida and Valeri Zelepukin of Edmonton. |
