Czech Republic wins World Championship!

Czech Republic is the 1999 World Champion. Finland won the second final game 4-1 and the series was tied with one win apiece. The Czechs won the first final on Saturday. In the following overtime period Jan Hlavac scored at 6.32 to give the Czechs the championship.

Czech Republic wins first final

Czech Republic beat Finland 3-1 in the First game of the two-game final series. The second final will be played tomorrow and the Czechs only need a tie to win the Worls Championship. If Finland wins Game 2, there will be a 10-minute overtime followed by shootout if necessary.
 

Sweden grabs bronze
Sweden defeated Canada 3-2 in the battle of the third place. Sweden had a 3-0 lead after two periods, but Canada mounted a strong come-back effort cutting Sweden's lead in one goal. Sweden weathered the storm, however, and grabbed the bronze medals.
 

Finland and Czech Rep. win semis

Czech Republic advanced to the finals of the 1999 World Championship by defeating Canada in two-game semifinal series on Thursday. Czechs won the second game 6-4 tieing the series. Canada had won the first game 2-1. After a scoreless 10-minute overtime the series was decided by shoot-out which Czech Republic won 4-3.

In the other semifinal series Finland advanced to the finals over Sweden. Finland won the first semifinal 3-1, but Sweden came back and won the regulation of the second game despite being outshot 32-20. In the following overtime period Marko Tuomainen scored at 6:25 to win the series for Finland.

Teams were divided to four groups (A, B, C, D) for round-robin Preliminary Round.
Top two teams of each group advanced to the Qualifying Round in two groups (E, F), playing a round-robin with top two teams of each group advancing to semifinals.

Semifinals are played in two games. The team that gets more points will advance to the two-game finals. If points are tied after regulation of the second semifinal game, an overtime period will be played followed by a shoot-out if necessary.
