The NHL trading deadline passed more quietly than in years. The biggest trade involved the New Jersey Devils adding some scoring punch for the playoffs as they acquired two-time 50-goal scorer Alexander Mogilny from the Vancouver Canucks for centers Brendan Morrison and Denis Pederson.

"Alexander Mogilny is an extremely talented veteran forward," said Devils GM Lou Lamoriello. "We feel that any time we have the opportunity to improve our hockey team with a player of Alexander's caliber."

The Busiest team was the Pittsburgh Penguins, who sent their top goaltender Tom Barrasso to the Ottawa Senators for goalie Ron Tugnutt and defenseman Janne Laukkanen.

The Penguins also traded defenseman Brad Werenka to Calgary for forward Rene Corbet and goalie prospect Tyler Moss; defenseman Pavel Skrbek to Nashville for defenseman Bob Boughner; left wing German Titov to Edmonton to reacquire left wing Josef Beranek; and a fifth-round draft pick to Anaheim for defenseman Dan Trebil.

"We brought in a group of players we feel could be key components not just to get us into the playoffs, but for years to come." said Penguins general manager Craig Patrick.

Atlanta traded right wing Ed Ward to Anaheim for a conditional pick in the 2001 Entry Draft.
