Brendan Shanahan scored a goal and added an assist as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 Wednesday night.
"We had a lot of fans here tonight," Shanahan said. "It was important that the team scored first. The people probably brought two hats to the game and whoever scored first, that's the hat they put on. It was nice to get out there and get the fans behind us and put some pressure on the home team." Detroit finished a three-game road trip with two wins and a loss and overall improved to league-leading 50 points. "Two wins on the road, especially this time of year, is always good," Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said. "It's a good break for us. It was good game for the guys, a way to enjoy the holidays." The Hurricanes dropped below .500 at 13-14-7 for a second time this season after losing three times in a four-game homestand. "They're a powerful offensive team and have at least the top three or four defensive players in the league based on their experience and skill," Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice said. "You're not going to get a lot of chances."
