League Wants $7M From YashinArchived from 1999-2000 season. | |
Alexei Yashin saga is entering the next chapter as the NHL Thursday asked an arbitrator to fine Yashin $7 million for the damages he has caused the Ottawa Senators by not being in the lineup.
NHL lawyer Bill Daly also confirmed the league is angry with the NHLPA for supporting a player who is ignoring the collective bargaining agreement between the league and its union. "It's nothing really that new," said Daly. "We said from the start that we were going to seek damages. I guess what we did by filing this last week was made it official." The union filed for arbitration on behalf of Yashin after the Senators suspended him for the rest of the season on Nov. 9. The Senators also contend Yashin owes them another year on his contract. "I can't make any comment because I know nothing about this," said Senators president Roy Mlakar. Yashin is currently working out with a club team in Switzerland. Daly said the league arrived at the $7-million figure by taking into account Yashin's current contract of $3.6 million US, and then factoring in his expected asking price of close to $10 million US next season. "There are a number of different ways to measure damages," said Daly. "We came to this figure by looking at what damage is caused to Ottawa by not having him in the lineup." A hearing before an arbitrator is not expected until May. |
