Yzerman Scores 600thArchived from 1999-2000 season. | |
Steve Yzerman made history in Detroit by becoming the 11th player in NHL history to score 600 goals as the Red Wings beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-2.
Yzerman scored on a power play at 12:30 of the first period. After winning a faceoff, Yzerman received the puck back and tried to center it, but it bounced off the glove of goalie Tommy Salo before glancing off the back of his left leg and into the net. "It was nice to get it here in Detroit," Yzerman said. "I was trying to lift it over everyone's stick, but it hit the goalie and went in. Ideally, I wouldn't have drawn it up like that but I've had a lot of lousy ones over the years." Yzerman seemed a bit embarrassed by all the attention and said that 600 goals pales to winning the Stanley Cup twice with the Red Wings in 1997 and 1998. "The two Stanley Cups blow away everything else. The other accomplishments are insignificant compared to those," Yzerman said. Yzerman has played only with the Red Wings in his 17 seasons in the NHL. He ranks second to former Pittsburgh star Mario Lemieux on the NHL's list of players who have scored all their goals with one team. Lemieux had 613 goals with the Penguins. "Look at his overall record," Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman said. "We were looking at it today and he's had a lot of accomplishments. This is not the end of it, but he has a lot of good numbers." |
