Coyotes KO Wings | |
After one minute of the first period defending champions, the Detroit Red Wings had a 2-0 lead and they were just going to cruise to a victory. The Phoenix Coyotes had other ideas about how to spend Sunday afternoon.
Rick Tocchet and Jeremy Roenick scored power-play goals early in third period and it was all even. With 7:13 left in regulation, Roenick put the puck behind Chris Osgood for the game-winning goal and the Coyotes took a shocking 2-1 lead in the Western Conference quarterfinal series. "Jeremy is a big-game player," coach Jim Schoenfeld said. "He enjoys the big-game situation. We talked before about pressure and how some people shy away from it, and some guys relish it. Jeremy looks forward to it." Tocchet compared Coyotes' third period come-back to Muhammed Ali's famous strategy for wearing out the opponent. "You blink, and it was 2-0," Tocchet said. "We never even knew what was happening. They went for the knockout in the first period, and we did a little rope-a-dope." In other action the Ottawa Senators' Alexei Yashin scored in OT and beat the New Jersey Devils, 2-1, to take a surprising lead in the series. The Washington Capitals needed double-overtime to get by the Boston Bruins, 3-2. Washington leads series 2-1. San Jose got their first victory, 4-1, over Dallas and Colorado beat Edmonton, 5-4, in OT. |
