Blues got rhythm

The St. Louis Blues were supposed to be rusty and off-focus after one week lay-off. Not a chance. The Blues rock'n'roll on their way to 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in Game 1 of the series.

St. Louis' special teams, which played a key role in the first-round sweep of Los Angeles, were once again hot as the Blues scored on power-play and short-handed.

"They're the defending champions and they are a fantastic hockey club," Brett Hull said, "That was a big win for us. That was huge."

"Remember, it's only one game," Hull added. "But, you've got to win one before you can win two."

The Red Wings appeared little off their and clearly not as pumped for the action as the Blues. Grant Fuhr made some spectacular saves early in the game to frustrate the Wings.

"We've got to play at a higher tempo than that," Detroit's Steve Yzerman said. "We just didn't play a high-tempo game. It was a little slow and a little sloppy."

Dominator rules
Dominik Hasek made 46 saves and the Buffalo Sabres beat the Montreal Canadiens, 3-2, in OT in the first game of the series.

For a while it looked Hasek was invincible until the Habs scored two quick goals with five minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime.

The OT belonged to Buffalo and the other hero of the game, Geoff Sanderson, who scored his second goal of the game at 2:37 into overtime.
