Sabres sweep Habs

1998 Playoffs

NHL teams

Matthew Barnaby scored in the first period and the Buffalo Sabres never looked back on their way to finish the sweep of the Montreal Canadiens. Dominik Hasek only let in one goal in the Sabres 3-1 victory in Game 4.

Much has changed with the Sabres since the start of the season. The team has overcome adjusting to a new coach and GM, home-crowd booeing their goaltender and internal strife with players. Now Hasek is a god in Buffalo and the team has grown together as a tight-knit unit.

"We seemed to grow with adversity," Buffalo's Matthew Barnaby said. "I don't think anybody believed in this team except for the guys in this room. We always believed in each other."

Hasek stepped up his play after somewhat shaky start in the series. Since the second period from Game 3, Hasek allowed one goal on 65 shots over a span of 101 minutes.

"Sometimes we live by the way we play," Hasek said. "But the thing is we always find a way to win. They worked hard, the Montreal Canadiens, but they had no chance."

Buffalo will meet the winner of the Washington vs. Ottawa series in the conference finals.

Red Wings win again
Sergei Fedorov had two goals and an assist and the Detroit Red Wings beat the St. Louis Blues, 5-2. Detroit has a 3-1 lead in the series and is now one game away from eliminating St. Louis for third straight season.
