Detroit blanks Dallas

1998 Playoffs

It was like a replay from last night's East opener when the Detroit Red Wings beat the Dallas Stars, 2-0, in Game 1 of the Western Conference final.

Martin Lapointe had a goal and an assist and goalie Chris Osgood stopped all 14 shots to record his first shutout of the playoffs.

Dallas failed to convert any of their five power-play opportunities and overall the Stars' offense was a far from the form that earned them the best record in the regular season.

"Detroit is a team that has put a lot of focus on their checking. Their offense is really just flowing from their good play in the defensive zone," Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said. "When they get the lead, they make it very tough on you, tough to get anything started."

Detroit flashed their fast attacks periodically but didn't control the game all the time. This was only Game 1 and there is no reason to panic for the Stars, but on the other hand Detroit has already guaranteed at least a split from first two games and the pressure is definitely on Dallas.

"We have the kind of team that knows how to adapt to whatever the situation is that we're facing," Lapointe said. "We have the speed. We can play physical if we have to. But we also have the discipline to play the way you need to do in this kind of game."
