Detroit takes over | |
Vyacheslav Kozlov broke a tie at 11:30 of the third period and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Dallas Stars, 3-2, in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals. Detroit enjoys a 3-1 lead in the series.
"Kozzie is no surprise," Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom said. "He's scored a lot of big goals for us in the playoffs over the years. Today was another big one." Kirk Maltby and Steve Yzerman scored in the first period to give the Red Wings an early lead. Dallas fought back with goals from Pat Verbeek and Sergei Zubov. The emotional peak of the afternoon was reached when injured defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov and team massage therapist Sergei Mnatsakanov were announced to the sell-out crowd during a stoppage in play with 10:34 left in the first period. The crowd responded with thunderous 95-second standing ovation. It was the first time Konstantinov attended Detroit's game after being severely injured in a limo accident along with Mnatsakanov last June. "It was very emotional," Detroit forward Igor Larionov said. "When you hear all those people cheer, those people who love him. I was deeply touched when I saw his picture up on the (scoreboard) screen." The series shifts to Dallas for Game 5 on Wednesday night. The Stars have to win just to stay alive and they have their work cut out for them trying to stop the Red Wings. "Right now, we're not looking at the big picture." Dallas defenseman Darryl Sydor said. "We've got to go out and play one game at a time. You've got to win one game before you can win three." |
