Stars stay alive | |
Goaltending was playing the major part again Wednesday night, but not in the way Chris Osgood would have liked.
Jamie Langenbrunner scored his first goal in the playoffs on a 90-foot slap shot 46 seconds into the overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals. "We were definitely looking to get a line change, and I just wanted to get off a shot and get it down the ice," Langenbrunner said. "That's the thing about overtime, you just try to get shots on net and not try to get pretty. Yes, I was really surprised that it went in." Detroit was 85 seconds away from the Stanley Cup finals when Guy Carbonneau tied the score and sent the game in overtime. "All we were trying to do is create a chance and just try to get something on the net," Carbonneau said. "We were very desperate at that time and we dug down and did all we could do. Nobody wanted the season to be over." It was a third long goal given up by Osgood and wipes away his strong performance until the overtime. The Red Wings still has the lead in the series going to Game 6 on Friday night in Detroit. Victory in Game 5 has given the Stars a new lease on life. Not only did they stay alive, but the pressure has shifted on Detroit. "We lose as a team and we have people who know what they have to do," said Detroit coach Scotty Bowman. "Going into Game Six, we are going to have to be open-minded. We can't think about what could have happened, nor can we think about what did happen." |
