Sergei Fedorov started earning his huge salary in the nick of time. Fedorov scored the game-winning goal with a skilled shot as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Washington Capitals, 2-1, in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the series.

"Experience has made a huge difference," Detroit's Steve Yzerman said. "We've been through a lot this season, good and bad. We're enjoying the playoffs. We've stayed level-headed when we've done well. Experience has been so beneficial to our team."

Tomas Holstrom scored the first goal of the game for Detroit just 35 seconds into the first period. That is how the score stayed until halfway through the third period despite Detroit outshooting Washington 13-1 in the first period and 34-18 in the game.

"It can't be better than this, waiting for the fourth game," said Holmstrom. "It's up to us. It's going to be a battle out there."

Brian Bellows tied the score on a power-play goal 9:25 left in the third period and the sell-out crowd of 19,740 had something to cheer about.

Then it was time for Sergei Fedorov to show why he is making all that money. He brought the puck up from the blue line and scored with a tremendous wrist shot between a defender's body and stick surprising Olaf Kolzig.

The Capitals have their work cut out for them. Only 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs have come back from being down 3-0 in the finals to win the Cup. The Capitals will have to take it one game at a time and hope for a miracle and do it again and again...

"It's deflating," Washington forward Craig Berube said. "It's do or die Tuesday. We have to go out and leave everything on the ice. There's nothing left to save it for."
