Red Wings win the Cup!

1998 Playoffs

NHL teams

For the second straight year the Detroit Red Wings are the Stanley Cup champions! Nothing could stop the Wings as they bulldozed through the Washington Capitals, 4-1, in Game 4 to finish the four-game sweep.

After the game was over and Steve Yzerman had been awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoffs MVP, it was time for the Cup.

Commissioner Gary Bettman presented the trophy to Yzerman who lifted it over his head in the traditional way. He then skated to wheelchair-bound Vladimir Konstantinov and put the Cup on his lap.

In a tremendous show of support the whole team gathered around Konstantinov before taking their turns skating with the Cup.

"Vladie's spirit was present in us all season long," winger Vyacheslav Kozlov said.

Game 4 started in a familiar fashion with Detroit scoring first midway through the first period.

"It's been the story of the series. They score in the first period and we're playing catchup," Washington defenseman Joe Reekie said after the opening 20 minutes. "We played hard, but they're a great team."

Detroit increased their lead in the second period before Washington managed to score and cut Red Wings' lead to 2-1. The glimmer of hope was shortlived as Larry Murphy got the two-goal lead back to Detroit before the period was over.

The final blow came early in the third period as Doug Brown scored his second goal in the game on a power-play to make the score 4-1. Washington never mustered a serious effort after that and seemed to have lost faith.

Chris Osgood in Detroit's net had another strong outing. He faced adversary all season as many in Detroit didn't think he would be able to take his team through playoff pressure. Ozzie proved them all wrong!
