Bruins Sign Samsonov, Thornton; Suspend GrahameArchived from 2000-01 season. | |
A big sigh of a relief was heard in Boston as the Bruins agreed to terms with center Joe Thornton and left wing Sergei Samsonov on three-year contracts.
Both players are expected to report on Wednesday. Anson Carter, the team's leading scorer last season, remains unsigned. "It is unfortunate that these agreements could not have been reached prior to training camp, but we are pleased that they have been resolved and Joe and Sergei will still be able to participate in some of camp," assistant general manager Mike O'Connell said. "With the signings of these two players today, we feel we have made important steps toward completing a very talented team." The Bruins also suspended goalie John Grahame indefinitely after he broke his ankle away from the hockey rink, an injury that is expected to sideline him for three months. The Bruins don't have to pay Grahame or cover his medical expenses, because an article in his contract says the team doesn't have to pay him if he can't play for reasons having nothing to do with hockey. The players' association is taken care of his medical. "We haven't got all the facts yet" about how Grahame broke his ankle late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, O'Connell said. "We're pretty sure what happened. I don't want to say anything until I'm 100 percent sure." |
