In a widely anticipated move the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim fired head coach Craig Hartsburg and replaced him with assistant Guy Charron.

"There's been a lot of frustration around the club," Ducks' general manager Pierre Gauthier said. "It builds and builds to the point where something has to be done. Guy is a very positive person. He brings a lot of optimism and enthusiasm to the club."

Hartsburg compiled an 80-88-29 record in 2½ seasons after replacing Pierre Page. This season the Ducks are on the bottom of the Pacific season with 5-12-3-1 record in their last 21 games.

I can't say there's one definite thing wrong with the team," Charron said. "We haven't generated the success that was expected. We have some young players who haven't dealt well with the circumstances."

The 51-year-old Charron was hired by the Ducks last June and will serve as the head coach at least through the end of the season.

"Well I'd like to have a long list (of changes), but the only thing I'm thinking about is facing the Rangers (Friday) and not trying to change a lot of things," Charron said. "It will be business as usual."

Before joining Anaheim, Charron spent the previous two seasons as head coach of Grand Rapids of the International Hockey League where his teams went 85-62-17.

"I've known this guy for a long time and he has a lot of experience," Gauthier said. "The key ingredient for us is to get into the playoffs, and we feel we can get back in with 50 games left."
