Top Sharks Remain UnsignedArchived from 2000-01 season. | |
Goalie Steve Shields signed a one-year contract with the San Jose Sharks on Friday. His deal contains a club option for a second year based on team performance, San Jose general manager Dean Lombardi said.
"If he and the team do well, he'll be rewarded," Lombardi said. "It guarantees that if he meets his and our goals, we can't walk away from our obligations. It clearly is a win-win situation." A day earlier centers Marco Sturm and Patrick Marleau agreed to new contracts with the Sharks, who still have several key players unsigned. Sturm igned a two-year contract with an option for a third year that could be activated if the Sharks have outstanding team success, Lombardi said. "The option is heavy towards team performance rather than individual performance," he said. "The key is that the team has to do well." Marleau, who turned 21 last week, signed a one-year deal. The Sharks still must sign four free agents, most notably team captain Owen Nolan. Also still unsigned are center Alexander Korolyuk, right wing Todd Harvey and defenseman Marcus Ragnarsson. "There won't be any high fives until they are all in," Lombardi said. "It's like a team during the season: You can't get too excited about winning three, because there are too many games to be played." |
