Blackhawks, Coyotes make 4-player swapArchived from 1997-98 season. | |
The struggling Phoenix Coyotes addressed their defensive needs by acquiring defenseman Keith Carney along with right wing Jim Cummins from the Chicago Blackhawks for disgruntled center Chad Kilger and defenseman Jay More.
Kilger, whose name had been mentioned in trade rumors, was the No. 4 pick overall by Anaheim in the 1995 NHL entry draft, but has struggled to live up to his billing, recording just 11 goals and 14 assists in 108 NHL games. "We have been looking to address our situation at center ice for some time now and we've been looking for a young centerman," said Blackhawks general manager Bob Murray. "The organization has always liked Chad Kilger and Jay more is a solid, gritty defenseman who comes to play every night." Carney is a solid and experienced defenseman who was a member of the United States Olympic and World Cup teams. "We addressed a major need on this team," said Coyotes general manager Bobby Smith. "We acquired a top-level defenseman. Everyone seemed to agree that we needed a top-level defenseman. We did pay a big price for this, giving up Kilger and More. We hated to do that. Cummins is going to add toughness and leadership. We hated to play against the guy." |
