Brett Hull of the St. Louis Blues had surgery on his left hand Sunday following an injury suffered in the first period of Saturday's 5-5 tie with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Hull had two pins surgically inserted in his hand and will miss the Jan. 18 All-Star game but be ready for the Olympics in February.

Tomas Sandstrom slashed Hull and the Blues wanted the Duck to be suspended. After reviewing the game tape the NHL declined any punishment and released the following statement.

"The act where Tomas Sandstrom slashed Brett Hull did not warrant discipline although it is unfortunate it resulted in injury."

Sandstrom, who has been suspended several times earlier for dirty stick work, claimed innocence after the game. When told he was identified as the slasher, Sandstrom said: "It must have been in the corner. It wasn't that bad."

Blues coach Joel Quinneville disagreed. "He (Sandstrom) didn't try to hit the puck or the stick," the coach said. "He tried to hit the hands.

"Guys are going down left and right around the league. With high sticks they say you have to be in control of your stick. Well, you have to control them below the waist, too."
