Selanne wants scoring titleArchived from 1997-98 season. | ||
"I'd like to win it," Selanne said. "If somebody's going to score more goals than me, that's OK. They're going to have to earn it though." Over the weekend Selanne backed up his words by scoring five goals in back-to-back games against Montreal and Ottawa. On Wednesday he scored his league-leading 50th goal in a 3-2 win over Chicago. It was the first time the teams met since Gary Suter's cross-check ended Paul Kariya's season. The Ducks have 11 games left in their season and they trail Edmonton, who holds the last playoff spot in the Western Conference, by eight points. "We haven't given up yet, but we know the playoffs are pretty far away for us," said Selanne. "We're playing for ourselves right now. We've loosened up and enjoying it more. I've never been a fan of must-wins. You want to win, but you want to have fun first." This season marks the third time Selanne has broken the 50-goal barrier. He scored a phenomenal 76 goals in his rookie season 1992-93, only to end up sharing the goal-scoring title with Alexander Mogilny. Last season he had 51 goals to finish second to Keith Tkachuk, who had 52. |
