Selanne signs 2-year extensionArchived from 1997-98 season. | |
Probably wanting to avoid any confrontation, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim signed All-Star right wing Teemu Selanne to a two-year contract extension Thursday.
Selanne's new deal has a total worth of $19.5 million. He will get an $8 million base salary in the 2000-2001 season and an $8.5 million base salary in the 2001-2002 season. On top of that he will receive a $3 million signing bonus spread over three years. His existing contract will remain in effect paying him base salaries of $3.4 million this season, $3.55 million next season and $3.65 million in 1999-2000. "I like security," Selanne said. "I've never been the type of person to go after the last dime, especially with this kind of money. I'm happy we came to an agreement, I'm happy that they brought it up and wanted to keep me here. The deal must be a relief to Disney officials who faced a public-relations nightmare earlier this season when Paul Kariya hold out for 32 games before signing a $15 million, two-year contract in December. "We are extremely happy to sign Teemu Selanne to a two-year contract extension," said Mighty Ducks general manager Jack Ferriera. "With all that Teemu has done for this organization on and off the ice, we felt that now was a good time to approach him about a possible extension. He is a proven leader on this team and is a wonderful ambassador to both hockey and the Mighty Ducks." Selanne is 28 years old and currently leads the NHL with 50 goals. He has 264 career goals in six seasons. |
