The Carolina Hurricanes built a four-goal lead and held on for a 4-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils. The victory inched Carolina closer to their first playoff berth in seven years.

"The New Jersey Devils had abused us all season, and it was nice to give a little back," Carolina's Gary Roberts said.

The Hurricanes broke a four-game losing streak and can clinch the Southeast Division title with five points in their five last games even if second place Florida wins all of its remaining games.

"We are getting there," said Carolina goaltender Arturs Irbe, who had 30 saves. "One game does not make us contenders, obviously, but we want to build on it."

Gary Roberts, Keith Primeau, Jeff O'Neill and Ray Sheppard scored for the Hurricanes, who ended the Devils' eight game unbeaten streak.

"God forbid we should ever score two power-play goals in the same game," Carolina coach Paul Maurice joked. "They wanted to make sure that didn't happen."

Scott Niedermayer and Sergei Nemchinov scored in the final six minutes for New Jersey, which lost for just the third time (10-3-2) on the road since the All Star break.

"We kept at it through the whole course of the game," New Jersey coach Robbie Ftorek said. "We had some chances but we just didn't put it away."
