It didn't take the Los Angeles Kings long to get it going after being yelled at by coach Larry Robinson Tuesday. The Kings beat the New Jersey Devils 4-0 Wednesday night behind a combined 40-save performance by Stephane Fiset and Manny Legace.
"We went through a series of meetings today," said Kings captain Rob Blake. "Pretty much all of it was effort. We weren't getting in the way, causing turnovers like we did tonight. When the effort is there, we're a tough team to beat. When it's not there, we don't have enough talent to win." Fiset, who had been sidelined with a groin strain on his right side, started in the net before having to leave with 6:31 to play in the second period after injuring the left side of his groin. Legace finished off the shutout which was the second shared shutout in franchise history. Mario Lessard and Doug Keans beat Boston 3-0 on Feb. 20, 1980. Craig Johnson started the scoring in the first period on a 2-on-1 break after a turnover by Devils' Sheldon Souray. "I just had the far side a little bit and I shot it," said Johnson. "I thought it missed at first but then I saw the light go on so I figured it was a goal." Rob Blake scored a short-handed goal to give the Kings a 2-0 lead in the second period. Defenseman Steve Duchesne and forward Vladimir Tsyplakov finished scoring in the third period . "We can read Larry's face," Duchesne said. "We know when he's a little upset. We had a good meeting this morning. Everything is positive all the time with Larry. That's what makes him different from a lot of coaches. You learn from your mistakes." The Kings end a five game road trip 2-2-1 and they have a 4-3-2 record after first nine games of which seven were on the road. |
