Maple Leafs hire Quinn as coachArchived from 1998-99 season. | |
It took the Toronto Maple Leafs only three days to find a successor to coach Mike Murphy who was fired on June 23. The man of their choice is former Canucks coach and GM Pat Quinn.
"It's an important day for me and I feel a great sense of pride that I'm able to say I am the coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs," Quinn said. Toronto's president and GM praised Quinn's coaching abilities and joked about his playing career. "As a player on legs that didn't move very fast, he found a way to play for nine years," said Dryden. "As coach in Philadelphia, L.A. and Vancouver, he found a way to make his players, his teams, everyone around him better." Quinn spent 11 years with Vancouver's president and general manager. He also coached the Canucks twice during that time, winning the coach of a year award 1992. He also won the same award in 1980 while coaching Philadelphia.
