Brett Hull scored 37 seconds into overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 2-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes in the battle for Western supremacy.
Dallas extended their unbeaten streak to 14 games since a loss to Vancouver on Dec. 4. The Stars improved to 24-5-6 which makes them the top team in the league. "For a second game in two nights, we played with discipline, and we did some very good things," Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We fought off their every move, then three good players made a great play at the end." Mike Modano scored a power-play goal and assisted on Hull's overtime goal. On the game-winner Modano was knocked down after receiving the puck from Jere Lehtinen, but managed to pass the puck to Hull who chipped it past Coyote goalie Nikolai Khabibulin. "I was gaining speed as the play was coming up, I got a little bit of breathing room," Modano said. "Both of the defense came to me and Brett was wide open. If there's one guy you want open in front of the net, it's him. I was falling and it wasn't the greatest pass but it got to him and he got good wood on it." The Coyotes played their second straight game without their top line of Keith Tkachuk, Jeremy Roenick and Dallas Drake. Tkachuk and Roenick, Phoenix's leading scorers, were injured Tuesday against the Los Angeles Kings and Drake was suspended for his hit from behind on Doug Bodger in the same game. |
