Blues Too Slick For OilersArchived from 1999-2000 season. | |
Jeff Finley scored his first goal of the season at 19 seconds of overtime as the St. Louis Blues beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2.
"I don't score very often, but they're always fun -- especially the game-winners," Finley said. "I just saw a chance to jump in the play." Finley, who has nine goals in 375 career games, scored the game-winner on a pass from Pierre Turgeon beating Tommy Salo in the Oilers net. "It was a bang-bang play," Salo said. "I was moving and I don't know if I touched it or not. It just happened so quick." Craig Conroy and Michal Handzus also scored for the Blues, who, after losing the first two games of the season, have won five of their last six games. Blues coach Joel Quenneville said that he likes the new overtime format "so far" and was praising the development of Handzus this season. "He's showing more offensive instincts than he demonstrated last year," Quenneville said. "We like that progress because we know defensively we can count on him." The Blues clearly set out to win in four-on-four overtime to earn the extra point, but that wasn't the case with the Oilers. "We wanted to play a little cautious," center Doug Weight said. "Obviously, that didn't work out. We're going to take the point." |
