Brett Hull celebrated the New Year in a grand fashion by becoming the 12th player in the NHL history to score 600 goals.
The Dallas Stars right wing scored his 600th and 601th goals in his 900th career game, making him the third-fastest to reach the milestone, as the Stars beat the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim 5-4. "It was a really neat thing to score the last goal of the millennium," Hull said. "I wanted to score this goal by my 900th game. It seemed like it wasn't going to go in. I had some great chances early, but when I finally got the goal, more than anything I was relieved." Hull and his father, Bobby, are the first father-son combination in the 600 club. Bobby Hull scored 610 in his career. Brett's 601th tied Jari Kurri for the 11th on the all-time list. "I know a lot of the people up there," Hull said. "I've played in the same era with Wayne Gretzky, Steve Yzerman ... And when I was growing up I watched my father, Phil Esposito. They were idols of mine. It's a big thrill." Hull wanted to reach 600 in 900 or fewer games. Gretzky got his 600th goal in his 718th game, and Mario Lemieux reached the milestone in 719 games. "It's quite a milestone," Hull said. "I've always been a goal-scorer, so that's what makes it special." |
