Valeri Kamensky scored two goals and Mathieu Schneider had the game-winner as the New York Rangers earned badly needed points with a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.
"We played well as a team," New York coach John Muckler said. "This win gives us great confidence. We played the kind of game we needed to play against Philadelphia to beat them." The Rangers are desperately trying to avoid missing the playoffs with the league's highest payroll. They have remained tied for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. "We've got to win," Rangers John McLean said. "We have nine games left and we don't have time to think about confidence. It was just a matter of coming out of this one with two points. That's the big thing, the two points." The Flyers were playing their third consecutive game without captain Eric Lindros, out with his fourth concussion in two years. Keith Primeau centered the Flyers top line between John LeClair and Keith Jones, but the line was shut down by the Rangers. "We just couldn't get any flurries going," LeClair said. "We weren't creating enough. We had some chances, but we needed to turn it up more. We had to get more shots. The second period was really lackluster for us." Rookie Simon Gagne scored both goals for the Flyers, who remain five points behind conference leader New Jersey. "They really did a good job checking us and got us out of our game because we couldn't work our low plays," Flyers interim coach Craig Ramsay said. |
