Jason Smith scored at 3:04 of overtime as the Edmonton Oilers resumed regular season after All-Star break with a 5-4 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.
"That's two in a row in overtime for us," Oilers coach Kevin Lowe said. "I hope it doesn't give us overconfidence, but it's certainly a nice time during the season for this to happen." Smith converted a 2-on-1 break with Bill Guerin by beating goalie Jeff Hackett with a low wrist shot to end Edmonton's franchise-record 22nd overtime game of the season. "I'm excited about that game, like winning the Stanley Cup," said Smith. Tom Poti, Georges Laraque, Bill Guerin and Todd Marchant also scored for the Oilers, who had a 4-2 lead after two periods. "I looked up at the scoreboard after the first period and I saw it was 3-2 and I said, 'Boy, that's a lot of goals in this building this season,'" Lowe said. "It was firewagon hockey out there, great entertainment for the fans. That's a huge win for us." Montreal's Trevor Linden had his first hat trick since March 9, 1996. Dainius Zubrus also scored for Montreal, which lost for the first time at home in 2000 (4-1-3). "I wasn't too happy with our defense tonight, but I will take the point," Montreal coach Alain Vigneault said. "It's a sign of our team, they just won't quit. We came back twice in this game. It's good for our confidence." |
