Jagr Stuns Capitals in OTArchived from 1999-2000 season. | |
Jaromir Jagr scored a power-play goal 5:49 into overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals. The seventh-seeded Penguins now have a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Jagr scored the game-winner on wrist shot from a weird angle past Capitals goalie Olaf Kolzig. "All game long, we didn't do anything on the power play," Jagr said. "I didn't want to shoot it. I haven't shot very well. I just tried to put it on the net. You don't look, just shoot on the net. It was a difficult angle, (you) hope that somebody gets a rebound." "I was surprised he picked that corner," Kolzig said. "He does that, looks one way, cocks his wrists and lets it fly. He didn't have much room at all, but I guess he had all he needed." Game 2 was played in Pittsburgh because of a scheduling conflict at Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena. Game 3 will be also in Pittsburgh on Monday before the series moves back to Washington. "Yeah, we're desperate, in the sense we have to win," said Kolzig. "But we're not desperate to where we have to change the way we're playing." Capitals coach Ron Wilson was furious about the two penalties called on Capitals defenseman Ken Klee in overtime. "I thought that was an awful call in overtime, but what can you do?" Wilson asked. "Kenny Klee slashed Jagr at the end of regulation and Jaromir Jagr hit him over his head with his stick. The referee says he didn't see that. Had it been the other way around, he certainly would have seen Chris Simon hit someone over the head with his stick. I don't accept that explanation when there are two officials on the ice." |
