Ed Belfour stopped all 18 shots for his second consecutive shutout as the Dallas Stars beat the San Jose Sharks 1-0 to take a 2-0 lead in the conference playoff series.

"I'm feeling strong and focused," Belfour said. "That's the key for me. I'm seeing the puck well and the guys are playing great in front of me."

Sharks mounted a ferocious attack during the final minutes of the game, but Belfour made the key saves including a spectacular glove save on a slap shot by Gary Suter.

"Suter's shot went through five or six bodies," said Mike Modano, who scored the only goal of the game in the first period. "Eddie made a great save, the save of the game."

San Jose has now gone 145:36 without scoring a goal and they must find a way to solve Belfour to have any chances for another upset.

"I think we feel real good about our effort but not the results," said San Jose center Vincent Damphousse. "I don't think Belfour has us psyched out. We know we can score against Eddie because we've done it before."

The Sharks were playing without captain and leading scorer Owen Nolan, who has foot and shoulder injuries.

"It's hard to watch, especially in the playoffs. It kills me not to be out there," said Nolan. "It's something where you never know what's going to happen. Injuries are part of playoff hockey. It's not my decision. The decision comes down to a handful of people."

Games Three and Four are in San Jose on Tuesday and Friday.
