The Detroit Red Wings just got a new lease on life as they beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-1 in the critical Game 3. Colorado still leads the second-round series 2-1.
"When you are down two games, you know you are just a game from being down three so it gives us a lot of confidence," Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said. "I think our goaltending was terrific and we got some goals at important times. This gets us back into the series with a solid home win." Detroit looked much younger and energized than in the first two games of the series. The Red Wings got power-play goals from Igor Larionov and Sergei Fedorov. Brendan Shanahan added an empty-netter. "It seems to me we didn't think much about going down three games," Fedorov said. "We mostly concentrated on playing our game." Colorado, which had won 14 of its previous 15 games, got the lone goal from Peter Forsberg. "We knew it would be hard to sweep that team," Avs forward Joe Sakic said. "That's a good hockey club. They played tonight like we played in the first two games, when we won." Colorado's Ray Bourque suffered a bruised left foot and did not return for the third period. "It's not broken," Bourque said. "We hope it can go down in a couple of days and I'll be all right. I got hit by the puck in the second period. I finished the period, but as I went on, the pain was too bad that I couldn't go out for the third." Game 4 is on Wednesday at Joe Louis Arena. |
